(More customer reviews)Bought at Costco for $20. Very difficult to turn on if it is not on a perfectly level, hard floor and all four pads touch. No adjustment for uneven flooring, so something must be placed under the pad that does not hit the floor, so that there is no wobble when pushing on the scale. Still, it takes a lot more than a "tap", as indicated in the directions, to turn on. More like pounding it with your heel.
Ours did, however, give an accurate reading. We were replacing a beam type balance scale, and stepping on the old scale and then the new one, readings were within tenths. The beam scale was accurate to 1/4 pounds, while this one give a digital readout in tenths of a pound.
I did notice once while vacuuming a rug near the scale, the scale turned on all by itself. Don't know if the magnetic field from the vacuum motor triggered something in the scale, or what. Haven't been able to duplicate the anomoly.
I purchased this scale because I found the beam scale to be difficult to slide the weights around and get a stable reading, and hard to see the numbers on the scale in low light conditions. It took up a lot of space as well. Stepping on a scale with a lighted, digital readout is a lot more convenient. If I can deal with this scale's foibles, I'll keep it. Don't think I could find anything better for the price.
UPDATE: 2/23/11. Returned the scale to Costco, as it became annoying for the amount of force required to "tap" the scale on. Purchased another, the exact same model, and this new one is easy to turn on with a reasonable tap. And the weight readings are about the same as the other one and consistent on repeated measurements. Since this second scale works well, I will bump my rating up a notch.
